Why Bareboat Charter Meal Planning Is Different

When you charter a bareboat sailboat or small yacht, you are responsible for everything — including meal planning, grocery shopping, and provisioning — often in an unfamiliar destination with limited refrigeration, storage, and water. Unlike an all-inclusive charter, a bareboat vacation requires thoughtful preparation.

You need to:

  • Plan meals for a full week

  • Calculate food quantities for a group

  • Maximize refrigerator and freezer space

  • Choose ingredients that store well in tropical climates

  • Minimize food waste

  • Accommodate dietary restrictions

  • Avoid overspending on island groceries

That’s exactly what Set Sail was written to help you do.

What Makes SET SAIL Different

This is more than a cookbook. It’s a step-by-step provisioning guide for sailing vacations. Inside, you’ll learn how to:

✔ Plan quick, delicious meals ideal for warm-climate yacht charters
✔ Organize grocery lists efficiently to save time and money
✔ Accommodate gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets
✔ Maximize limited storage space onboard
✔ Reduce food waste during a week-long sailing trip
✔ Use ingredients commonly available in popular charter destinations
✔ Spend less time in the galley and more time enjoying life on the water

Each easy-to-follow recipe is labeled by dietary preference, grouped for easy planning, and accompanied by a photo. With recipes inspired by Mediterranean and Caribbean flavors, Set Sail walks you step-by-step through meal planning and provisioning before you leave home. So when you arrive at your boat, you can relax, cast off the dock lines, and focus on what really matters - an incredible vacation at sea!

This cookbook makes me want to charter a boat, invite some friends, and "camp at sea" for a week, cooking some of these delicious recipes! The book strikes the perfect balance between culinary inspiration and practical guidance - it’s truly capturing the art of cooking at sea! Cooking on a boat isn't easy, but this book makes it feel totally doable - and delicious!

  • Peyton Bland - June 18, 2025

From cover to cover, this book is a real gem! The spiral binding is a great idea. All of the photos are beautiful and include not only shots of the finished dishes but also shots of the tropical paradise in which you will be sailing. The chapters are comprehensive and detail each of the steps that make for a successful trip. I particularly like Part 1 of the book. It tells how plan your trip, how to create meal plans that cover a variety of situations, as well as a very thorough chapter on how to provision your boat. In Part 2, there are nine chapters of recipes covering everything from drinks to desserts and everything else in between.

While the excellent selection and variety of boat-friendly recipes alone make Set Sail worth adding to your galley, it’s Part 1 of the book that truly sets it apart. With thoughtful guidance on trip planning, provisioning (how and where), and practical tips for life aboard, this section proves just as valuable as the recipes themselves. Combined, they make Set Sail both an inspiring cookbook and a trusted companion for anyone preparing to cruise. I highly recommend it!

We are so happy that we purchased this book! It was so helpful with the planning processes and covered a lot of things we didn’t consider before our trip. Our group had a couple members with different dietary restrictions and the dietary labels helped us a lot, along with the suggested modifications. The recipes truly are simple and delicious, and we appreciated that we were able to cook for ourselves without spending all our boat time cooking and grocery shopping. We really enjoyed the Chicken Waldorf Salad and Mango Mousse recipes.

An excellent guide for anyone looking to plan a bareboat charter! This book goes far beyond just the delicious and easy to prepare recipes - it's loaded with so much knowledge and practical advice learned from a decade of experience chartering. The Red Snapper with Mango Salsa and Caribbean Quinoa Salad are particular favorites of mine. For anyone who's looking to get into their first adventure at sea, I cannot recommend this book enough, it's going to save you time and effort to make sure you spend less time worrying and more time relaxing on the seas!

  • Shayna Slowinski - September 27, 2025

This book is THE resource for meal planning while on your charter yacht trip. It not only provides delicious recipes, but it provides tools for meal planning around your itinerary, dietary preferences, and offers tips on grocery shopping. Stocking a boat for an extended trip is a daunting task, but with SET SAIL's guidance you can feel confident in your plans and even have some fun! Nevena shows you how to mix and match recipes to allow for maximum variety when space and item selections can be scarce. My favorite section are the salads. They can transition from lunch, to dinner, to a snack and are nutritious and light. Just what you need after a day of island hopping!

  • Gage Speer - September 27, 2025

I'm so glad I found this book for our charter yacht trip. It covered so many things I hadn't thought of and provided excellent charts and lists for shopping and meal planning. The book contains beautiful pictures and comes spiral bound to allow it to stay open for review even if the boat is rockin'. This detail really shows the author's knowledge of meal prep while living on the water.

  • Kim Bell - September 29, 2025

I’m so glad I purchased this book. It was so helpful in planning and executing the meal planning and preparation for our charter cruise. The author’s years of experience really give you the valuable information that you would otherwise have to learn the hard way. All the recipes are delicious and easy to prepare. This planner will keep you from over or under buying food, a big deal with the scarcity and prices there. Her realistic advice about everything from storage to getting rid of garbage, to the timing of food preparation saves so much stress so everyone (even those with food restrictions) can enjoy the meals and maximize time for fun. The photography is so beautiful you will get excited for your vacation and the amazing scenery of the islands.

Set Sail has been an incredible guide for meal planning on our family’s boat trips. Being able to easily map out provisions needed each day of our trip was a game changer. We’ve also been using it as a guide for non-vessel trips as well. It’s just as great of a planner guide for a week at a cabin or RV!

  • Joe Mattingly - November 27, 2025

Easy recipes and nice photos. I have enjoyed exploring the recipes!

  • Evelyn Belzer - December 15, 2025

What a great gift to give anyone who enjoys boating for a day, a week or more! Every aspect of what you need to make the task of providing food and drinks worry free is considered and the photographs make everything look delicious and easy to prepare. Truly, a wonderful gift idea for anyone who enjoys boating of any kind.

  • Kyle Nelson-Purcell - January 10, 2026

As someone who struggles to put together cohesive meals at an Airbnb, I was impressed by what my buddy was able to plan and make on a boat at sea. Turns out he had been taking many of the tips and recipes out of Set Sail. I was particularly impressed by how well it catered to folks with dietary restrictions. Another one of our friends is Celiac and it can be hard to adjust meal planning to, but we had a great variety of choices for him and enjoyed them all. My personal favorites were the Jerk Fajitas and the Lentil Bolognese, but hopefully I get to try some more of these recipes on future trips - a super flexible and useful book to have.

The book is remarkable! Love the photography, the menus, the layout, and everything else.

Every Yacht Club, harbor bookstore and gift shop should have this book in their merchandise sales area.
